What you need to know about Breast Augmentation incisions. There are several incisions that may be used for the placement of breast implants. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the most common incisions is the inframammary incision. This incision is about an inch and half long and is place in the fold under the breast. This incision is perhaps the most commonly used incision for breast augmentation. It gives the best access to the area under the muscle and the best visibility of structures in surgery. This incision allows the surgeon to correct almost any problem that may occur in the future with the breast implant. The scars are usually well healed and fade with time. However the scar is not invisible, and if you look closely enough you can see it. If the surgeon places this scar too low on the breast there is a chance that it may be seen from under the bra or bathing suit top when the hands are raised. This is not a very common problem.

The next most common incision that is used for Breast Augmentation is the periareolar incision. This incision measures about an inch and half as well. It is located in the border of the areolar skin (the darker skin surrounding the nipple) and the normal skin of the breast. It is usually placed either in the lower half of the areola or to the side, depending on the surgeons preference. The main advantage of this incision is that the scar falls on an area of natural color transition between the areolar skin and the breast skin, thus being less visible to the eye. The obvious advantage of this incision is that there is no scar on the breast itself. Sometimes malposition of the implant may result from this approach.

The fouth and least common way to place is the implant is through the umbilical (belly button) incision. This approach uses a small incision placed around the umbilicus. With the use of surgical scopes the surgeon plaees the implants under the muscle or the breast tissue. The advantage of this approach is the lack of scars on the breast. However, like the transaxillary approach, the incidence of malposition is greater.
