Foremost among these subspecialties of general surgery is Burn Surgery. However, Plastic surgeons have contributed significantly to treatment of burn victims due to their knowledge of wounds. With the ability to shift and move tissues from various parts of the body, the plastic surgeons have helped the burn victims resume a functional life and be rehabilitated quicker. It is primarily in the correction of major scar deformities that plastic surgeons can demonstrate their skill. Many burn victims suffer from scars that contract and cause the normal tissues and structures in the vicinity of the burn to become distorted. Plastic surgeons can release such scars and reconstruct the area so that such distortions and functional deformities are improved.
